Parent & Prodigy: Jonah

DAY 5 OF 5

Jonah's Grumpy Heart & God's Lesson

Explain how Jonah became unhappy and even angry when God showed mercy to the people of Nineveh. He expected their destruction but was disappointed when they repented.

Jonah went outside the city and sat under a shelter God had provided. However, God sent a worm to destroy the plant and a scorching wind, causing Jonah to feel faint.

Key Verse: "But the Lord replied, "Is it right for you to be angry?" (Jonah 4:4 NIrV)

Key Term(s):

  • Mercy

Let's Talk!

  1. Ask your child how Jonah's reaction to God's mercy on Nineveh made him/her feel. Discuss the idea that sometimes we might feel upset when things don't go the way we expect.
  2. Explore God's response to Jonah's unhappiness and anger. Discuss how God's lesson to Jonah emphasized His compassion and His desire for all people to come to repentance.
  3. Encourage your child to think about a time when they had to learn a lesson about compassion or understanding. Share any experiences you've had that relate to this theme.
  4. Ask your child how they can learn from Jonah's experience in Chapter Four.
