Untold Stories: Remembering the Faithfulness of God

DAY 8 OF 10

Not To Us

There is a war for our worship. We were created with the intrinsic need to worship. It’s the way we were formed to connect with God. However, ever since the garden, there have been schemes to take the affection of man from their Maker and give it to Satan, often in the most insidious ways. The Israelites were not immune to this war and fell prey to idolatry time and time again. The biblical definition of idolatry is: “the worship of something or someone other than God.” The root word for idol is “worthless.” The first commandment to the children of Israel when they were leaving an idol-worshiping Egypt was to “have no other gods before me.” The Lord taught Israel how to be faithful and how to worship Him the way He wants to be worshiped. Yet once more, their hearts would become corrupt with idolatry. In Psalm 115, the writer shows us once again the worthlessness of idols and the trustworthiness of God. We, like Israel, are not immune to this war over our worship. The Lord is calling us out from worshiping our careers, our success, the applause of man, and even our own families over Him. Our idols may not be made of clay, bronze, or stone, but they are just as effective at trying to persuade our worship, our priorities, and our affection from the Lord!

Take a moment today and ask the Lord the same question David asked in Psalm 139:23-24: Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
