In Step With the SpiritSample

Jesus found his disciples asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane. They probably had not intended to fall asleep, but they were tired and unaware of the magnitude of the situation. Christians want to be godly, but we grow tired from the effort and content with the apathy the world allows. We can easily “fall asleep” because we, like the disciples before us, don’t understand the magnitude of the situation. The words Jesus spoke to Peter that night speak to us today. He said, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”
How does Jesus tell Peter to battle temptation?
Why can the battle be difficult?
Years later Peter used similar words to warn the early church and encourage them to continue to live for God. He wrote, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9). Why is it dangerous to grow apathetic about your relationship with God?
What is your source of strength?
Are you “alert” or apathetic?
