From Creation to CallingSample

Work. Just the word itself probably prompts a series of images and even emotions. Is work the block on your schedule that pushes out fun, relaxing, or even enjoyable activities? Or is it an exciting daily opportunity for you to reflect God’s creativity? When you think of work, do you consider it necessary to keep a roof over your head and gas in your car? Do you assume that you, like so many, will “live” for the weekend or for your vacation? Or are you excited to discover the work that God has prepared for you and how he will use you to impact the world?
As we consider God’s perspective on this activity that will occupy tens of thousands of hours of your life, we discover God has a lot to say about you and about work. You are the result of work. Psalm 33 reminds us that God spoke and the heavens and the earth–and you–were created! Have you ever stopped to consider that you, the incredible mixture of physical attributes, personality quirks, and life details that make you unique, are the result of God’s work, His creativity? You were made to know, love, and serve God. He created you to steward, or manage, your gifts, talents, and work in a way that honors God and reflects His glory.
That’s a pretty exhilarating truth. Your work, your life, reflects God. God, the One who meticulously knit you together with a specific blend of features, strengths, and talents, who knows every detail about you today and every day, invites you to leverage all of what and who you are to advance His kingdom. Work is so much more than a timecard. It’s a way to steward our time, talents, and gifts in a way that serves God. Let’s dive in.
Reflection Questions:
- Think about how you defined work. Do you consider your work a gift or blessing?
- In what ways can your life work strengthen your relationship with God and intrigue those around you to know Him better?
