From Creation to CallingSample

Paul’s letter to one of the early churches in Rome shows us how the Church family is supposed to function and relate to one another. In God’s family, love, unity, generosity, and joy are key markers that the church is genuinely pursuing God. It can be hard for those of us who haven’t experienced kindness and gentleness in our earthly families to expect this kind of love from God’s family or to show that kind of love to others. Selflessness and sacrifice don’t come naturally; that’s why the church needed to hear these instructions and reminders! This kind of “others first” love is something we have to practice and work hard at, and experiencing the love of Jesus makes all the difference. His love for us fuels our love for another.
Reflection Questions:
1. How would you summarize Paul’s advice to believers? What parts do you find most challenging?
2. How are these descriptions of church communities different from the way you’ve seen community outside of the church? In what way can the church be a model of God’s love?
3. As a part of the community, you play a vital role in the health of your church. What areas do you want to work on and develop in your own life to make your church more Christlike? Do you need to be more compassionate? Forgiving? Generous? Gentle? Loving?
