Anxiety

DAY 12 OF 30

The Illusion of Control

One of the sneakiest triggers of anxiety is the illusion of control. We often believe that if we can just plan enough, prepare enough, or control every detail, we can keep ourselves safe. But when things slip out of our hands, anxious feelings rise quickly.

The Israelites fell into this trap when they looked at the Promised Land and convinced themselves it would be safer to go back to Egypt. Anxiety clouded their trust in God and led them to believe they could control the outcome by returning to what was familiar. Trying to control outcomes left them restless instead of resting in God.

We do the same. Maybe you over-plan a big presentation, replay every detail of a conversation, or obsess over health symptoms on the internet. Anxiety grows because deep down you know that you cannot control everything, no matter how hard you try. The illusion of control is exhausting, and it never delivers peace.

I will admit, I have fallen into this trap too. On airplanes, I always chose a window seat so I could “control” the lookout. At the first bump of turbulence, I would flip the window shade up as if seeing what was outside would help me manage what was happening. It was a small thing, but it gave me the illusion that I had some control. The truth is, no amount of looking out the window would calm the storm. Real peace does not come from my little strategies, it comes from trusting God.

Jesus reminded His followers of this truth: the birds are cared for and the flowers are clothed without worry. If God is faithful to creation, how much more faithful will He be to His children? Peace is never found in control. It is always found in surrender.

Prayer:
Lord, when I try to control what is beyond me, it only stirs anxious feelings. Remind me that You provide for every need and that my life is valuable in Your sight. Release me from the illusion of control and teach me to rest in Your faithful care.

Daily Challenge:
Choose one area of your life where you have been over-planning or over-controlling because of worry. Write it down, then pray over it, releasing it back into God’s hands.

About this Plan

Anxiety

Anxious thoughts. Racing worries. Sleepless nights. For many of us, anxiety has become part of our everyday vocabulary, even something we call “my anxiety.” But what if God never intended for anxiety to take permanent residence in our lives? Over the next 30 days you will explore what anxiety is, where it comes from, how it shows up in our lives, and what God’s Word says about overcoming it. Anxiety is real, but it does not have to define you. Let’s walk through this plan together and take our peace back.
