DAY 16 OF 20

Whether we realize it or not, we all tend to see God through the lens of our human understanding. If the significant people in our lives are loyal, honest, and faithful to us, then we tend to see God the same way. But if our father leaves us, or our mother uses harsh words, or our siblings hurt us, or our friends let us down, or our spouse is disloyal, then, little by little, we may start letting those experiences change the way we see God, too. That’s when it’s important to remember that, as the prophet said here in the book of Numbers, God is not human. That means any human characteristics, experiences, or patterns we try to put on Him simply won’t fit. Where humans fail, disappoint, hurt, or let us down, God simply won’t. Where humans leave us questioning if anyone could actually be faithful to us consistently, God’s character is the only consistently faithful thing we can fall back on. When everything else feels unreliable or shaky at best, we can rest assured that God is faithful… always.

This week, start a list of all the characteristics of God you know or have experienced. The next time you’re tempted to wonder if God is just like everyone else—if what you feel from humans is the same as what you expect from Him—go back to that list to remind you that God is above it all. He is faithful no matter what

About this Plan

Always

As humans, we all wonder what God is really like? Is God kind, loving, powerful, attentive, loyal? Is God distant, unfair, harsh, judgmental, or absent? In other words, we’re asking: what can we be sure is always true about who God is? In this devotional, we’ll look to Scripture to explore those questions and ground the answers in unshakeable, unchangeable truth, uncovering more about who God is and why we can trust Him not just now, but always.
