From Merib-baal to Mephibosheth
Mephibosheth’s original name was Merib-baal—a name that spoke of strength and overcoming. But years in Lo Debar reshaped how he saw himself.
When he finally stands before King David, he does not speak with confidence or expectation. He says, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?”
That statement reveals something heartbreaking. Lo Debar did not just become his address—it became his identity. Time and silence renamed him.
This is what happens when pain goes unspoken long enough. It stops being an experience and starts becoming a label. Shame settles in quietly. Hope feels unsafe.
Can you see yourself in that moment? Standing before the King, carrying years of disappointment, rehearsing why you don’t belong.
David does not correct Mephibosheth’s words. He restores his position. Jesus does the same. He does not debate shame—He replaces it with truth.
Identity restoration happens when God speaks louder than pain.
Reflection Questions:
What name has pain given me?
Have I lived with it so long that it feels true?
Prayer:
Father, remove every false name pain placed on me.
Declaration:
I receive my identity from God alone.
