The Last Supper : True King
As we reflect on Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, we see a powerful contrast between human expectations and God’s Kingdom.
People thought the Messiah would come as someone who would be celebrated, admired, and applauded. If you were a great ruler entering a big city, how would you want to arrive? With crowds cheering? Music playing? A grand horse and royal display?
Yet when we read the Gospel of Matthew 21:1–5, we see that Jesus chose something unexpected. He entered Jerusalem on a donkey. Not a war horse. Not surrounded by military power. A donkey symbolised peace, humility, and gentleness.
Jesus was showing us that His Kingdom is different. He is not a King who rules by force—but by love. Not by pride—but by sacrifice.
When Jesus entered the Temple (read Gospel of Mark11:15–17), He saw that people were being cheated. The place meant for prayer had become a place of greed. Jesus turned over tables because He cared deeply about protecting people’s access to God. His anger was not selfish—it was righteous. As we read in the Epistle to the Ephesians4:26, it is possible to be angry and yet not sin.
This reminds us that Jesus’ heart burns for what truly matters: that nothing should stand in the way of people being saved and living with Him forever.
And who is this King, really?
In heaven, Jesus is called the King of kings and Lord of lords (see First Epistle to Timothy 6:15). He is the eternal ruler—far greater than any earthly celebrity, rock star, or political leader.
Reflection Questions for Families
- What does Jesus’ humble entry teach us about true greatness?
- Are there “tables” in our hearts that need turning over—things that block our connection with God?
- How can we honour Jesus as King in the way we live this week?
The true King did not come to impress the crowd—He came to save it. This Easter, may we welcome Him not just with cheers, but with surrendered hearts.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I praise You because You are the true King, and You will rule forever. Amen.
