The Last Supper: Lamb of God
Long before Jesus came to earth, God gave His people a powerful picture of salvation.
When the Israelites were slaves in Egypt, a final plague struck the land. But God made a way for His people to be spared. In the Book of Exodus 12:7, 13, He instructed them to place the blood of a lamb on their doorposts. When the Lord saw the blood, He would “pass over” their homes, and their firstborn sons would be saved.
That is why it was called Passover—because judgment passed over those covered by the blood of the lamb.
Each year, Jewish families remembered this miracle with a special meal. It was a celebration of freedom and deliverance.
Now imagine the scene centuries later. Jesus gathers His disciples to celebrate that same Passover meal. During what we now call the Last Supper, He takes bread and wine and gives them new meaning. In the Gospel of Matthew 26:26–28, Jesus says the bread is His body and the cup is His blood—poured out for the forgiveness of sins.
In that moment, Jesus was revealing something profound: He is the true Passover Lamb.
Peter later writes in First Epistle of Peter 1:18–19 that we were redeemed not with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ—a lamb without blemish or defect.
Every one of us has felt guilt. We have all sinned. As the Epistle to the Romans 3:23–25 reminds us, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Yet through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are justified freely by His grace.
The blood on the doorposts in Egypt was a sign of protection. The blood of Jesus on the cross is our eternal covering. Because of Him, judgment passes over us. Because of Him, we are set free.
Reflection Questions
- What does it mean to you that Jesus is the Lamb of God?
- How does knowing you are forgiven change the way you live today?
- Is there guilt you need to surrender to Him?
The Lamb was slain so we could be saved. This Easter, remember: freedom is not earned—it is received through the precious blood of Jesus.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank You for dying to save me from my sins.
Please show me how to live for You. Amen.
