Don't Go Back to the Yoke
DEVOTIONAL
Freedom, once received, still has to be guarded. Because the pull to go back is real.
Paul knew this. After everything he had taught about grace, he gives one urgent command: it is for freedom that Christ has set us free, so stand firm, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Stand firm. Two words that assume something will try to move you. The Christian life is not only walking into freedom, it is refusing to drift back out of it.
He puts it another way to the same church: you were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? That kind of pressure does not come from God. Notice how it happens. Not usually a dramatic collapse, but someone or something cutting into your lane: a voice of condemnation, an old habit of striving, a return to performance dressed up as devotion. A little of that yeast, Paul warns, works through the whole batch.
This is why Scripture tells us to be on guard, to stand firm in the faith, to be strong. Not because our freedom is fragile, but because the old yoke is familiar, and familiar things are easy to pick back up without noticing. Many believers do not lose their freedom in a moment. They surrender it slowly, going back to the very weight Christ lifted off them.
So watch for the cut-in. When condemnation, comparison, fear or self-effort tries to slide back into your lane, you do not have to let it. You have stood at the table. You know who you are. Stand firm.
You are nearly there. One day remains, and it is the one this whole journey has been walking towards. Tomorrow, we simply live free.
REFLECTION
What old yoke most often tries to slide back onto you: condemnation, performance, comparison, fear? How will you stand firm against it?
FREEDOM STEP
Name the specific yoke that most tempts you back into slavery, and decide in advance how you will respond to it when it comes today.
PRAYER
Father, thank You that You set me free, and that I do not have to carry the old weight again. Help me stand firm. When the familiar yoke tries to return, give me the courage to refuse it and keep walking free. Amen.
