Walking Through Easter

DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: The Garden of Gethsemane

In the Garden of Gethsemane, we see the depth of what Jesus was about to endure. He prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39).

The “cup” in Scripture often represents God’s wrath and judgment against sin. Jesus knew He was about to bear the full weight of divine judgment for the sins of the world. Isaiah 53 foretold this moment, saying that “the Lord has laid on Him (Jesus) the iniquity (sin) of us all” (Isaiah 53:6).

Jesus experienced deep sorrow and anguish. He was not detached from the suffering ahead. Yet He submitted fully to the Father’s will. He willingly chose obedience, even when obedience meant the cross.

This reminds us that salvation is costly. The cross was not accidental. It was the determined plan of God, embraced by the obedient Son.

When we share the Gospel, we are speaking of a Savior who willingly endured judgment so that we would not have to. All who trust in Him are forgiven and declared blameless before God.

Reflection:

  • What does Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane reveal about His obedience?
  • How does knowing He suffered willingly shape your gratitude?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for submitting to the Father’s will and bearing the judgment I deserved. Help me to live in gratitude and speak of Your sacrifice with reverence and clarity. Amen.

About this Plan

Walking Through Easter

In this 5-day devotional, you will walk through key moments of Easter week: the Triumphal Entry, the fulfillment of the Passover, Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane, the Last Supper, and the cross. Each day is rooted in Scripture and centered on the core truths of the Gospel—Christ’s substitutionary death, the forgiveness of sins, and the righteousness given to all who trust in Him. As you reflect on the cost of redemption, you will also be reminded of your calling and strengthened in your confidence in sharing it with others during this meaningful season.
