Exodus: From Suffering to Salvation

DAY 1 OF 7

Knowing the God Who Hears Me

There is a melody that, when you listen for it, echoes throughout the Bible. Though the lyrics of each narrative may vary, they carry with them a rhythm that even now repeats itself in our lives today.

In the story of Exodus, this melody begins on a sad note. It starts with suffering—oppression so deep that the cries of the Israelites rise to heaven. Picture it: a people groaning under the weight of slavery, longing for deliverance, yearning for hope.

Watch this scene of Israel’s anguish. Allow yourself to feel their despair and hear their cries as they wait for the God who defends, provides, forgives, and redeems.

So why should we care about an ancient Hebrew liberation story? Because if you want to understand Jesus–a man immersed from childhood in the narrative of Israel– you have to understand Exodus.

Like Israel, you may feel forgotten, oppressed by circumstances, or desperate for change. But the story of Israel’s liberation shows us something powerful: God sees, hears, and moves toward those in need.

Though we are separated by thousands of years, we and the Israelites still share the same Exodus melody: creation, enslavement, liberation, and renewal.

We were created by God to live in a loving community with Him and His creation. However, we fell into our own Egypt—we became slaves to the sins that so easily ensnare us. Our pride, greed, and lust created the need for liberation, which only the divine Deliverer could provide. We needed rescuing from our personal Egypt.

In Israel’s darkest hour, God relentlessly reveals Himself as the One who defends, provides, forgives, and redeems. Israel’s cries had been heard, and their Rescuer had come.

Our deliverance comes from Jesus, the God who rescues.

When the loss of a loved one casts a shadow that darkens our joy, Jesus stands alongside us. When the weight of personal responsibilities is heavy, Jesus braces us with the comfort of His presence. When shame boils in our stomachs, Jesus sets our eyes on Him and the future—filled with hope, rest, and joy.

Over the next few days, we will explore how Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s rescue plan for humanity. Through Him, and only Him, you can find your exodus too.

Reflection:

What areas of struggle in your life need to be brought into God’s freedom?

Prayer:

God, thank You for the freedom that Jesus won for me. Please help me to see You in the song of my exodus journey. Amen.
