Ask, Seek, Knock: The Promise Of Matthew 7

ASK

It’s funny how much we like to overcomplicate the Bible.

When I enrolled in seminary, I signed up with the expectation that I was going to become a master interpreter of God’s Word.

I was going to uncover all of the tips, tricks, and secrets required to become an effective writer, pastor, and teacher.

Then I met Dr. Old Testament. No, that’s not his real name, but it could have been.

This man could open up the Scriptures in a way I had never seen before. It’s as if while we sat in the classroom with him, the words literally came alive and swirled around our heads.

It was beautiful.

Over time, he taught us how to do that. He taught us how to see what had been laid plainly in front of us.

Enter this verse.

Maybe you’ve heard 1,000 sermons preached on Matthew 7:7. Maybe you’re a brand new Christian and this is your first time laying eyes on it.

What you think about God will determine how you think about this verse (and every verse in the Bible).

For a minute, I want you to forget everything you think you know about it. For a second, forget even that this is a verse from the Bible. Simply picture the person who loves you most in the world: a parent, a spouse, a friend. Imagine they were the ones saying this to you now.

How does it feel?

What do you see?

Beautiful interpretation of the Bible begins with an uncomfortable understanding of how much God loves you and wants good things for you.

There aren’t any restraints or hoops to jump through. All God wants you to do is ask. All God wants you to do is seek. All God wants you to do is knock.

Don’t overcomplicate how simple it is to live a blessed life.

Don’t underestimate how ready God is to give you what you truly desire.
