The happiest workers

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! (Psalm 34:8)

I was in an office for an appointment. As I sat in the waiting room, I saw several office workers rushing. Their faces were filled with seriousness and worry, and no one smiled. Each of them seemed to be filled with stress and devoid of joy. It saddens me to think that each of them has just started their workday and will spend the next seven hours in this state.

But then I saw someone who must be the happiest worker I have ever seen. This woman even sang while working. Some of the serious, worried, and unhappy workers I had seen before even stopped to say hi to her. Immediately they said kind words and light jokes with her. It is clear that she was the real heart of this office building and not just a janitor mopping the floors.

The woman with the mop reminded me that it is not work that makes you happy. Nor is it the world that makes you happy. You are the one who brings joy to your work, and you are the one who makes the world a happier place. God did not create you to be miserable in this world. God brought you here to spread love and share that love regardless of your situation.

George Bernard Shaw once wrote: "The forces of nature other than restlessness, selfishness, a bunch of sickness and sorrow complain that the world will not dedicate itself to making you happy." Let us all follow this beautiful example of a janitor and bring joy to the workplace, happiness to our world, and love to everyone around us. Let us be a force of joy of nature and loving children of God working to clean this world with our mop and lift this world with our smile.

Reflection: The main determinant of happiness is ourselves. It is not determined by what is happening around us. If we choose to rejoice and be grateful, then our moods and even the conditions around us will feel it. So, start to rejoice and spread happiness around us.

The key to a happy life is to be joyful in our duties. When the task becomes a pleasure, the burden becomes a blessing.
