Day 6 - Lack of Discipline

One area we don’t often think about where earthly fathers can fall short is in the area of disciplining us. It might seem strange for this to be a topic because none of us enjoy being disciplined. However, being properly disciplined is a crucial part of growing up. When we don’t receive proper discipline we can be missing some lessons we may have to learn the hard way later as adults.

Sometimes dads just don’t have the backbone or the proper knowledge on how to discipline their kids, so they don’t. It’s easier to just let kids have their way instead of fighting it. At least the short-sighted view comes to that conclusion.

The Bible has a few classic examples of fathers not disciplining their kids and reaping the consequences of that. One of the most vivid examples is Eli, the priest. His sons committed lots of horrible sins which were even worse since they were abusing their power as priests. Eli did not discipline them as he should and allowed them to get away with it. But God did not allow them to get away with it. I bet they wish their dad had disciplined them growing up versus learning not to disrespect God the hard way.

If your earthly father did not set any healthy boundaries for you growing up, know that God has boundaries for us. Read His Word to find out what they are. These boundaries are set up to position us for success not to keep us in. Without staying within them, we open ourselves up to consequences.

Ask God to show you the beauty in the boundaries He’s set for you.
