I once visited a church where the pastor stood up at the offering time and gave the usual giving talk. But then, he added, “Visitors. Don’t think you can let the bucket pass you. If you usually shop at Coles but had to stop into Woolworths, you wouldn’t be able to get to the checkout and walk out, saying ‘I will give this money to Coles because that’s my usual shop.’” It got a few laughs, but it is always something I have remembered. I wonder how many people reached into their pocket guiltily or unwillingly wrote a cheque? 

Paul doesn’t want us compelled by guilt but changed by God to be cheerfully generous in our churches and ministries. It is easy to give to what we are passionate about, what we see has value, and where we desire to see change. That may be financial giving, but it also includes our time and gifts. Don’t give money, your time, or gifts out of obligation. Lean into what God has given you a heart for and be generous there

Thank you, God, that you have created each of us with a different passion or drive. Help us to love and live from that place so that we can generously sow seeds that will reap a great harvest for your glory.
