We Don’t Run Scared

At the writing of this Bible Plan, the United States is in one of its most divisive presidential elections ever. When a presidential debate comes on television, little kids have to leave the room. People who never make political statements are making political statements. Candidates are accused of new criminal acts almost daily. All news is political news. If we were ostriches, some of us would have our heads so far in the sand our feathers would be singed black from the Earth’s molten core. But this isn’t just about “America.” Most of the world has watched this election like some odd reality show.

Again, at the writing of this Bible Plan, the United States’ presidential election is weeks from a vote. Yet, despite what feels like an upside-down stormy ocean, we—the Jesus-following Church—do not run scared with our pants hiked up. Why? It’s not because we think “our candidate” will win. No, our leader will never be elected. He won’t ever get much news coverage either. He’s never cheated at anything. He has no secrets. He doesn’t live in a White House, big house, black house, tan house, rent house, penthouse, or brown house—He lives in God’s house. He lives in us. The Church.

Jesus-followers, we don’t just go to church, we are the Church, and we exist for the world. We know power comes from private prayer, not public-opinion polls. Despite nasty headlines every news cycle, His mercies are new every morning. We—not some party, not a country, not a race—we the Church are a royal priesthood, Under God.

You know what’s great about living Under God? We can always look up!

Do you feel something coming alive? Is your head coming out of the sand? Have you been weighed down or tangled up in the worries of the day for too many weeks? Look up.

Pray: Jesus, when You came, everyone thought You’d overturn governments, but instead You changed hearts. Will You overturn mine? Show me places where fear and politics have vetoed Your power and love. My allegiance belongs to You. Amen.

Under God?

What dominates the headlines doesn't have to dominate our hearts. There’s only one name that can bring the world together, and you won’t find it on a ballot. What we’re under changes us.
