Let's Talk Jesus!

‘They probably think I’m “converting” them…’

In several parts of the world, ‘conversion/converting’ is a red flag today. Especially with updated laws coupled with political and religious unrest. Among the youth, the statement sounds more like: ‘You might get cancelled if you do that’.

If I share my testimony or pray for a person who has different beliefs than mine, these are the statements I fear the most. I try my best to ensure that ‘converting’ is the last experience they get from me. But at the end of the day, I know and realise that this is exactly what I’m going for.

‘Convert’ (verb) is derived from a Latin word convertere which means to turn around or transform. This is the primary goal, for the person to turn 180 degrees from their sinful ways and step into a new life that is filled with the love of God. But to make this point clear in the least offensive way is hard.

But you see, the Gospel was meant to offend. Just ask the Pharisees and teachers of the Law at Jesus’ time. It was meant to say ‘your life is sinful, so change!’ And you cannot change this fact. Then how can we tackle the ‘Don’t try to convert me’ statement? Jesus’ answer is simple.

In Matthew 10, as He sends off his disciples into the mission, he gives them a set of instructions. He starts with the practical ones first.

  1. Do not go far (aka start with people around you)
  2. Travel light (if being minimalistic is a trend, Jesus started it)
  3. If you do not get a good welcome, then leave

But then Jesus goes deeper.

  1. Have your antennas up at all times. Jesus clarifies that the mission is dangerous, and will need both practicality and humility to discern how to stand your ground during difficult conversations and speak the Truth in love.
  2. Naïve is not the way to go. Jesus makes sure we know the reality that people WILL question us.
  3. Quitting is not an option. When people realise that His truth is absolute, they might turn against us, but we are not to cave in because we’re already on the winning side with God!

And when you experience pushback, rejection or even counter arguments, remember it does not change who you are and you can choose to move on.

Our culture may not allow for copy-pasted comebacks and possibly the original meaning of ‘convert’ is forever lost. But, it’s on us to be aware of & carry His burden for the fragilities of our world. And, alongside learn to do the deep work of knowing our faith well – both personally and in community.

Prayer: Jesus, as I stand on the rooftop and shout your Gospel or pray in broad daylight, give me fresh courage to fight off questions, statements and actions that are against you. Father, it is because of you that I have nothing to be afraid of. I know that you hold my life in your hands. Amen.

Let's Talk Jesus!

Remember that first encounter with Christ and the burning passion to talk about Him? Eventually that fire became an ember. What happened? ‘I talk about Jesus, but is it convincing enough?’ ‘They don’t want to open up to me.’ While these questions and fears are real, it is important to know what the Word of God has to say. This 5-day devotional is for those wondering how and where to start sharing Jesus.
