Being With God Together: Plan for Married CouplesExemplo
Verbalize Gratitude Towards Him For The Big and Small Things
In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 we see that giving thanks is the will of God for us. If you’ve ever met someone who is abundantly grateful you know that gratitude changes us. Someone saying a simple “thank you” can energize you and bring joy to your day.
When your spouse shows appreciation to you, it makes you feel seen and valued. I’ve noticed in my own marriage that not only does Dylan feel seen when I thank him, but it also makes me more aware of all he does for me and our family when I make a habit of thanking him. As I begin to say “thank you” for one thing, I notice another thing he does for me and I start to feel more grateful for him. Gratitude all the sudden becomes a beautiful cycle that lifts up our marriage and friendship.
Gratitude is mentioned 157 times in the Bible and thanks or thanksgiving is mentioned 72 times. It’s clear when we read God’s word that the people of God are meant to be marked by gratitude, specifically gratitude for God and all He has done and is doing.
As a couple, one way you can connect with God is by verbalizing your gratitude to Him for the big and small things in your life. When you do this I think you will find that it also becomes a beautiful cycle in your relationship with God that lifts up your friendship with God. As you begin to thank God more you’ll notice him at work in your life more and you’ll discover new things to thank him for.
This week as you go about your days say out loud in your home together: “Thank you God (and then fill in the blank).” If He is doing something big in your life, thank Him for it. But also thank Him for the small things. God is sovereign over everything so you can thank Him for clearing a storm but you can also thank Him that your favorite creamer came back in stock at your local grocery store.
As you grow in gratitude together as a couple you will find you have a deeper communion with God.
