Grieving a Failed RelationshipExemplo
Psalm 41:9 says, "Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me."
Betrayal is defined as a violation of a person's trust or confidence. As common as that definition is, betrayal can look different for every person. For some, it was when your secret was told; for others, it was when your best friend stopped reaching out or when you were let go at a job you worked so hard to get. It is a difficult day when the relationship that once caused you great joy, laughter, and even comfort in the most challenging times is now the reason for your heartache.
In this Psalm, David is writing during the betrayal of his own son Absalom and once trusted advisor, Ahithophel. Ahithophel is believed to be the grandfather of Bathsheba, so once David mistreated her, he was out for revenge, but the Lord stepped in and saved David. This protection does not excuse David's actions, but it was not Ahithophel's job to seek retribution. At this point in scripture, we know David grieved his sin, but we also now know he lost a trusted friend. He felt isolated and alone but ran to God and expressed his pain. Betrayal is not a new feeling; humans have been experiencing this for generations. If only forgiveness and grace had been offered instead of revenge, David might not have felt so alone. The silver lining in this story is that David's relationship with God shifted through this time. He became so reliant on the Lord that he overcame his temptations and heartbreak and followed God all his days. When we lose those closest to us or those we thought we needed to survive, God will show up and provide us with the strength to move forward.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for never giving up on us. Thank you for also providing us with the grace to move forward. We pray that as we are hurt and betrayed, we cling to the hope that you will never forsake us. We love you, Amen.

Either way, we are experiencing significant loss and grieving what we thought could be forever. In scripture, we are reminded of how much God cares for us, and despite the disappointment, we will experience in this life, our heavenly father is always near to us.
