IN the LIGHT - Learning to Live in the LightExemplo
DAY 3: THE LIGHT OF MY SALVATION. WHOM SHALL I FEAR?
Fear is a common human emotion caused by anything that may bring about pain or threaten our well-being. Fear can be ignited by very real physical danger or grow from a thought or worry birthed in our minds. But no matter where the source of our fear comes from, fear itself has the power to psychologically cripple even the strongest of humans. Fear weakens our immune systems, increases our stress hormones, and has been found as the root cause of various health issues including high blood pressure, ulcers, and heart disease.
This is why the Bible is constantly encouraging us to overcome fear by putting our faith in God. 1 John 4:17-18 (NLT) speaks of this saying, “God is love, and all who live in love live in God and God lives in them... Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not experienced His perfect love.”
King David often wrote songs when he was afraid to remind himself that God was more powerful than his fear. He wrote Psalm 27 in this way when he said, “The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident,” (Psalm 27:1-3, NLT).
Worship and read the entire chapter of Psalm 27 out loud whenever you feel afraid. Worship has a way of getting our eyes off of our current situation and onto our Savior. When we are captivated by Jesus, our fears no longer have the power they once did.
Prayer: Our prayer today is the same that David prayed as he continued in Psalm 27:4-5 (NLT): “The one thing I ask of the Lord—the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in His Temple. For He will conceal me there when troubles come; He will hide me in His sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock.”
