Who Is Jesus

DAY 8 OF 8

Jesus Is God

This is one among the many explosive claims about Jesus. John describes Jesus as God. This God has entered our world. He didn’t flash into existence magically. He entered the basic structure of our existence. He stooped down to the bottom so that he may raise us all up. Unless God enters the depths of our existence he will not be able to raise us to the heights of his existence. That is what we celebrate every Christmas.

It shouldn’t be too hard for us to understand this. We all experience a bit of divinity. It happens to us when we experience something that is inexplicable, we refer to that as “heavenly”. As humans we experience an element of the divine when we reason and love. If we as mere humans can carry some aspect of the divine without contradicting our humanity, it should be possible for the divine one to add humanity to his nature.

To understand this, Frank Sheed says, we have to understand the words, Person and Nature.

Question1: Who is Jesus?

He is One Person with Two Natures. He is the second person of the Trinity, God the Son.

Question 2: What is his nature?

He has a divine and human nature. As 1 person he can draw from either or both of these natures.

This is not a contradiction. A contradiction is, if something is A and non A at the same time and in the same way. It will be a contradiction if Jesus was a man (A) and not a man (non A) at the same time. Whereas Christians are not claiming that Jesus is a human and not a human at the same time. We are saying Jesus is human and divine. Human nature and Divine nature are not mutually exclusive categories. Divine nature and human nature don’t exclude each other. They can co-exist.

For example, I am Bobby, a person, and I possess a human nature. My limitation is this: I possess only one nature. But as a person I sense a bit of the divine in me (the image of God).

In Christ the situation is different from ours, after all he is God. He is one person with two natures. This is what we mean when God the Son entered our world. He added human nature to his divine nature and is now uniquely placed to redeem and elevate us all.

In Him was life, says John 1:4. And he is willing to share this life with us.
