World’s Got Nothing On You
This song talks about the disease that affects us all. The disease of the heart called discontentment. If we don’t allow the Lord to heal us from this disease we can live our whole lives in a perpetual state of envy, jealousy, and bitterness.
As fellow sufferers, we have a few symptoms in common. Instead of being grateful for the gifts and possessions that we have, we find people who have more than us and desire what they have. We also share an insatiable desire for more. We want more money, more things, and more popularity. And when we get it, we want some more.
First Timothy chapter six says that Godliness with contentment is great gain. In this scripture lies the mysterious cure for our disease. Instinctively we think that gaining the earthly possessions and success that we crave will satisfy us and bring us the happiness we desire. This accumulation of earthy treasures however, seems to have the opposite effect and leaves us wanting even more than before. Here we learn that the great gain we are searching for is in fact Godliness, gratitude, and contentment and if we find those things we will actually find happiness and rest for our souls. It’s seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness that’s the cure.
In our day and age it’s harder to keep this life-changing truth in front of us than ever before. We are constantly being marketed to and being sold the lie that possessions and fame brings happiness. But now that we know the truth, let’s chase after it with everything in us. We have the answer and we know the cure. Let’s do this!
Action steps:
We have an opportunity to be content. Even if you have to look deep within, each one of us have things we can be grateful for. Take some time and make a list of 10-20 those things. Then begin to go through each of those items and thank the Lord for blessing you with it. If you’re like us, you may need to make this a monthly routine. Maybe even daily! As we work through this process, then finally we can begin to live life with true joy and contentment.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for all the blessings in my life. You have been so good to me and I’m sorry for not being more grateful. Please teach me the beauty of contentment and help me to seek your Kingdom and righteousness first. You know what I need and what is best for me so help me be satisfied with what you choose to give me. Amen
