 <div class="label">21</div><div class="s1">God Rejects Zedekiah&#8217;s Request</div><div class="p"> 1The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur son of Malkijah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah. They said: 2&#8220;Inquire now of the Lord for us because Nebuchadnezzar#21:2 Hebrew Nebuchadrezzar, of which Nebuchadnezzar is a variant; here and often in Jeremiah and Ezekiel king of Babylon is attacking us. Perhaps the Lord will perform wonders for us as in times past so that he will withdraw from us.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3But Jeremiah answered them, &#8220;Tell Zedekiah, 4&#8216;This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I am about to turn against you the weapons of war that are in your hands, which you are using to fight the king of Babylon and the Babylonians#21:4 Or Chaldeans; also in verse 9 who are outside the wall besieging you. And I will gather them inside this city. 5I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and a mighty arm in furious anger and in great wrath. 6I will strike down those who live in this city&#8212;both man and beast&#8212;and they will die of a terrible plague. 7After that, declares the Lord, I will give Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials and the people in this city who survive the plague, sword and famine, into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to their enemies who want to kill them. He will put them to the sword; he will show them no mercy or pity or compassion.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;Furthermore, tell the people, &#8216;This is what the Lord says: See, I am setting before you the way of life and the way of death. 9Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague. But whoever goes out and surrenders to the Babylonians who are besieging you will live; they will escape with their lives. 10I have determined to do this city harm and not good, declares the Lord. It will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will destroy it with fire.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 11&#8220;Moreover, say to the royal house of Judah, &#8216;Hear the word of the Lord. 12This is what the Lord says to you, house of David:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Administer justice every morning;</div><div class="q2">rescue from the hand of the oppressor</div><div class="q2">the one who has been robbed,</div><div class="q1">or my wrath will break out and burn like fire</div><div class="q2">because of the evil you have done&#8212;</div><div class="q2">burn with no one to quench it.</div><div class="q1"> 13I am against you, Jerusalem,</div><div class="q2">you who live above this valley</div><div class="q2">on the rocky plateau, declares the Lord&#8212;</div><div class="q1">you who say, &#8220;Who can come against us?</div><div class="q2">Who can enter our refuge?&#8221;</div><div class="q1"> 14I will punish you as your deeds deserve,</div><div class="q2">declares the Lord.</div><div class="q1">I will kindle a fire in your forests</div><div class="q2">that will consume everything around you.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="p">1This is what the Lord says: &#8220;Go down to the palace of the king of Judah and proclaim this message there: 2&#8216;Hear the word of the Lord to you, king of Judah, you who sit on David&#8217;s throne&#8212;you, your officials and your people who come through these gates. 3This is what the Lord says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place. 4For if you are careful to carry out these commands, then kings who sit on David&#8217;s throne will come through the gates of this palace, riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by their officials and their people. 5But if you do not obey these commands, declares the Lord, I swear by myself that this palace will become a ruin.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6For this is what the Lord says about the palace of the king of Judah:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Though you are like Gilead to me,</div><div class="q2">like the summit of Lebanon,</div><div class="q1">I will surely make you like a wasteland,</div><div class="q2">like towns not inhabited.</div><div class="q1"> 7I will send destroyers against you,</div><div class="q2">each man with his weapons,</div><div class="q1">and they will cut up your fine cedar beams</div><div class="q2">and throw them into the fire.</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another, &#8216;Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?&#8217; 9And the answer will be: &#8216;Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="q1"> </div>

 <div class="p">1Zedekiah son of Josiah was made king of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin#37:1 Hebrew Koniah, a variant of Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim. 2Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention to the words the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.</div><div class="p"> 3King Zedekiah, however, sent Jehukal son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: &#8220;Please pray to the Lord our God for us.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison. 5Pharaoh&#8217;s army had marched out of Egypt, and when the Babylonians#37:5 Or Chaldeans; also in verses 8, 9, 13 and 14 who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.</div><div class="p"> </div>

 <div class="p">8The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom for the slaves. 9Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves, both male and female; no one was to hold a fellow Hebrew in bondage. 10So all the officials and people who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free their male and female slaves and no longer hold them in bondage. They agreed, and set them free. 11But afterward they changed their minds and took back the slaves they had freed and enslaved them again.</div><div class="p"> 12Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13&#8220;This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. I said, 14&#8216;Every seventh year each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you six years, you must let them go free.&#8217;#34:14 Deut. 15:12 Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay attention to me. 15Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom to your own people. You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name. 16But now you have turned around and profaned my name; each of you has taken back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they wished. You have forced them to become your slaves again.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;Therefore this is what the Lord says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim &#8216;freedom&#8217; for you, declares the Lord&#8212;&#8216;freedom&#8217; to fall by the sword, plague and famine. I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth. 18Those who have violated my covenant and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two and then walked between its pieces. 19The leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials, the priests and all the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the calf, 20I will deliver into the hands of their enemies who want to kill them. Their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.</div><div class="p"> 21&#8220;I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials into the hands of their enemies who want to kill them, to the army of the king of Babylon, which has withdrawn from you. 22I am going to give the order, declares the Lord, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, take it and burn it down. And I will lay waste the towns of Judah so no one can live there.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="p">6Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7&#8220;This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of me, &#8216;Pharaoh&#8217;s army, which has marched out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt. 8Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 9&#8220;This is what the Lord says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, &#8216;The Babylonians will surely leave us.&#8217; They will not! 10Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian#37:10 Or Chaldean; also in verse 11 army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn this city down.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11After the Babylonian army had withdrawn from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh&#8217;s army, 12Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property among the people there. 13But when he reached the Benjamin Gate, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, &#8220;You are deserting to the Babylonians!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;That&#8217;s not true!&#8221; Jeremiah said. &#8220;I am not deserting to the Babylonians.&#8221; But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. 15They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.</div><div class="p"> 16Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time. </div>

 <div class="p">1In the tenth year, in the tenth month on the twelfth day, the word of the Lord came to me: 2&#8220;Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and against all Egypt. 3Speak to him and say: &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,</div><div class="q2">you great monster lying among your streams.</div><div class="q1">You say, &#8220;The Nile belongs to me;</div><div class="q2">I made it for myself.&#8221;</div><div class="q1"> 4But I will put hooks in your jaws</div><div class="q2">and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales.</div><div class="q1">I will pull you out from among your streams,</div><div class="q2">with all the fish sticking to your scales.</div><div class="q1"> 5I will leave you in the desert,</div><div class="q2">you and all the fish of your streams.</div><div class="q1">You will fall on the open field</div><div class="q2">and not be gathered or picked up.</div><div class="q1">I will give you as food</div><div class="q2">to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the sky.</div><div class="m"> 6Then all who live in Egypt will know that I am the Lord.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;You have been a staff of reed for the people of Israel. 7When they grasped you with their hands, you splintered and you tore open their shoulders; when they leaned on you, you broke and their backs were wrenched.#29:7 Syriac (see also Septuagint and Vulgate); Hebrew and you caused their backs to stand</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will bring a sword against you and kill both man and beast. 9Egypt will become a desolate wasteland. Then they will know that I am the Lord.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Because you said, &#8220;The Nile is mine; I made it,&#8221; 10therefore I am against you and against your streams, and I will make the land of Egypt a ruin and a desolate waste from Migdol to Aswan, as far as the border of Cush.#29:10 That is, the upper Nile region 11The foot of neither man nor beast will pass through it; no one will live there for forty years. 12I will make the land of Egypt desolate among devastated lands, and her cities will lie desolate forty years among ruined cities. And I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries.</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations where they were scattered. 14I will bring them back from captivity and return them to Upper Egypt, the land of their ancestry. There they will be a lowly kingdom. 15It will be the lowliest of kingdoms and will never again exalt itself above the other nations. I will make it so weak that it will never again rule over the nations. 16Egypt will no longer be a source of confidence for the people of Israel but will be a reminder of their sin in turning to her for help. Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="p">17Then King Zedekiah sent for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked him privately, &#8220;Is there any word from the Lord?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Yes,&#8221; Jeremiah replied, &#8220;you will be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, &#8220;What crime have I committed against you or your attendants or this people, that you have put me in prison? 19Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, &#8216;The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land&#8217;? 20But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 21King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.</div>
