Scattered: Doing Life as the Ministry Sent OutSample

It’s easy to get caught up in all the great things we can do with technology, medicine, engineering and all the other fields of study these days. We are reminded of the great accomplishments each day on the news, on the web, and in our social media feeds.

It’s easy to become prideful. Even as the church, we can slip into a prideful state of mind. We look at our campuses that we used to call sanctuaries with the technology, lights, sounds, and comfortable seats and are impressed by how well we are doing. We marvel at the large auditoriums that we can fill for worship concerts or mega conferences proclaiming the gospel across the world. 

If we are not careful, we might find ourselves in the same boat as the descendants of Noah. They wanted to make a name for themselves. So, they began an impressive building campaign. And they were developing wonderful new technology to help get that done. It even caught the eye of God and He came down to look.

Then, He scattered them over the earth and confused their language so they couldn’t do that again! Their desire was not for God’s glory, but their own. Sometimes God scatters His people because of their pride and arrogance. We need to be careful to prevent ourselves, our ministries, our churches, and our nations from repeating their failure. 

Perhaps the scattering that we see happening now will cause us to return to Him. Will cause us to confess our sinful pride. Maybe it will remind us that whatever we accomplish should be to bring glory to His name and not to make a name for ourselves.
