How You Can Find God’s Will

Some time ago, I heard about a conference that was held on fasting. Religious leaders around received promotional information about the upcoming event, and on a flyer that was handed out to promote the conference, it said, “Fasting Conference... Food Provided.”

Jokes aside, I often find people asking me the question, “What’s the point of fasting?” And as I speak about this most important discipline, I have discovered that many choose not to fast because they don’t really understand what it’s all about.

One common misconception is that fasting is trying to manipulate or convince God to give you what you want. That couldn’t be further from the truth! Fasting is much more about humbling ourselves, surrendering our fleshly desires and submitting to God’s will for our lives than it is looking to get our way.

When we fast with a clear desire to draw closer to God, we focus ourselves physically and spiritually on Him. That is when the Holy Spirit speaks loudest and clearest to us, just like He did to the apostles in the book of Acts (Acts 13:1-3). So if you’re looking to know God’s will for your life, make a decision to pray and fast. Allow Him to speak to you and lead you as you submit yourself, body, soul and spirit, to His will!
