Overcoming Eating Disorders

DAY 1 OF 7

Eating disorders can quickly turn ordinary moments into anxious ones. They can contribute to a lack of peace and a growing sense of anxiety, stress, and exhaustion. Living with an eating disorder can transform food—something necessary to survive—into a source of constant fear, stress, and overwhelm. Work parties, family lunches, and holiday celebrations become difficult to navigate because of the emotional toll food can bring. But there is hope.

There is a way to find peace, and His name is Jesus. Remember, peace isn’t just something God can provide, it’s actually who He is. Just look at Isaiah 9:6 NIV:

For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Jesus is the Prince of Peace. If you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or worried, say His name and allow it to wash over you.

Maybe it sounds good in theory, but you’re not sure how you can actually overcome your battle with food. Maybe you’ve experienced countless sleepless nights and intense emotions, wondering if you’ll ever find a way out. But know this. If we trust in Jesus, we know that there is nothing He can’t overcome. Jesus said in John 16:33 ESV: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus endured everything as He hung on the cross. He bore the weight of this fallen world—every sin, trial, heartache, and emotion. But the grave couldn’t hold Him. He rose three days later, conquering all things, so that today we could live in freedom.

Today, if you’re feeling trapped by your battle with an eating disorder, reclaim your freedom. Say the name of Jesus. Rest in Him, knowing that He never promised this life would be easy—but He did promise to be with us in the middle of it, and He has already overcome all of it. Over the next few days, we’ll talk about some practical steps to help you overcome your battle with eating disorders and discover the healthy, abundant life Jesus offers.

Pray: Father, I come to You today feeling overwhelmed. Deliver me from my battle with eating disorders. Help me to fully experience Your peace, grace, love, and mercy. When I’m anxious, help me cast my cares on You, knowing that You’re with me, You can handle all of it, and You’ve already overcome. In Jesus’ name, amen.

*We know that battles with eating disorders are complex and stem from many different factors. We will address this topic from a spiritual perspective, but if you’re struggling, or someone you love is, it’s time to seek help. Look for a Christian counselor or a doctor in your community. Tell someone you trust. We aren’t meant to battle life alone, so ask God to reveal your next step.

Day 2

About this Plan

Overcoming Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are underwhelmingly discussed, highly misunderstood, and rarely mentioned in conjunction with Scripture and faith. But even though the Bible may not address this trial specifically, we can still look to the Scriptures for wisdom, truth, and healing. In this 7-day Bible Plan, we’ll explore what Scripture says, learn how we can overcome eating disorders, and rediscover the hope we have in Jesus.
