Overcoming Eating Disorders

DAY 5 OF 7

As you learn to guard your heart, you must also be honest with yourself and decide whether you need some protection against toxic relationships. This is one of the toughest yet most valuable areas to address in your battle with food.

During your journey to find healing, consistency is key, and cutting out relationships that do not consistently please the heart of God will do wonders for your progress! Scripture is very clear about that. Just look at a few of the many places we’re instructed to remove harmful relationships and replace them with God-honoring ones:

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. Proverbs 13:20 NIV
Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 NIV
Surely you need guidance to wage war, and victory is won through many advisers.  Proverbs 24:6 NIV

Now, think about it. Are the people closest to you striving to be who God created them to be? Are they advising you with the wisdom and truth of God’s Word? Do they encourage you and build you up? If the answer is no, then maybe it’s time to reconsider those relationships. No one is perfect, but the people you choose to support you through this battle should be people who push you to be the best version of yourself, and who lead you closer to Christ.

If a relationship causing you harm is with a parent or spouse, you might need to seek out a professional counselor to help you navigate what is healthiest for you. Seeking help, along with diligent prayers, can produce miracles in a broken relationship.

Pray: God, reveal to me any relationships that I might need to take a step back from. Surround me with people who are becoming more like You, and help me to be a great friend as well. Thank You for creating us to need others. Give me wisdom as I go throughout my day, and thank You for who You are. In Jesus’ name, amen.

About this Plan

Overcoming Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are underwhelmingly discussed, highly misunderstood, and rarely mentioned in conjunction with Scripture and faith. But even though the Bible may not address this trial specifically, we can still look to the Scriptures for wisdom, truth, and healing. In this 7-day Bible Plan, we’ll explore what Scripture says, learn how we can overcome eating disorders, and rediscover the hope we have in Jesus.
