Overcoming Eating DisordersSample
God is peace, truth, and love. Our enemy, though, comes to steal, kill, and destroy—he wants nothing more than to steal your confidence, kill your purpose, and destroy your joy.
Without confidence, you’ll feel frozen, unable to move or step out because you fear you may fail or be rejected. A lack of confidence keeps us from living out the boldness God calls us to. It also prevents us from sharing vulnerably with others when we need help and from receiving love and affirmation from others.
Without purpose, it’s hard to even get out of bed. If you become saddled with insecurity, the enemy knows you will be hesitant to follow God’s calling to share His good news with the world.
We’ve each been created with specific talents and passions that God wants us to use to lead people into relationship with Him. But if we’re too busy doubting ourselves and filling our minds with all the reasons we aren’t qualified or good enough to do what He’s asking, we’ll never fulfill the purpose God has designed for us.
Without joy, we’re running on empty and depending on the world to bring us any kind of happiness. Joy is a gift that grows in the hearts of those who abide in God and believe He is faithful even when times are hard.
1 Peter 1:8 NIV says: ... even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.
The enemy is nothing but a thief. He knows that if he can rob you of true joy and have you depending on this broken world for happiness, he’ll have an easier time breaking you too.
But there’s hope! The second half of John 10:10 reveals God’s grace-filled counterpunch to the enemy’s tactics: Jesus assures us that He came to bring us life and life to the full.
Imagine having life to the full again. Can you picture what it will be like to live completely free from addictions, destructive habits, and anxiety? Imagine what it would look like to live with the assurance that God has called you and deemed you worthy of a specific purpose.
When we deny the enemy the opportunity to steal, kill, and destroy us, God is able to bring us into the rich, abundant life that brings honor and glory to His name!
Pray: Father, thank You for bringing us abundant life through Christ. Guard my heart against the enemy, and help me fully trust and follow You. I surrender my battle with food completely to You. Show me my next steps to overcoming this struggle, and surround me with people who can help me fight it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
*We’ve talked about a few ways we can reframe and redeem our battle with eating disorders, but we know that it’s a process. Eating disorders stem from many root causes, so it’s wise to seek out a doctor, counselor, mentor, and trusted group of friends. You’ll need a multi-faceted approach, plus plenty of prayer and Scripture.
