Human: An 11-Day Devotional by Mosaic MSCSample
EVERLASTING LIGHT
When it comes to weather, we all have different ones that we prefer. To some, there is nothing like a hot summer day with the sun out and a sky empty of clouds. Others would say they love rainy days; not necessarily being out in the rain, but enjoying the rain from the comfort of their home. However, most people would agree that stormy weather doesn’t fall into the category of desirable weather.
Now, whereas weather explains outside conditions and the state of the atmosphere, it can easily represent what’s happening on the inside of a person’s soul. Some days are bright when everything is going great, and other days can feel like a storm. In the song Everlasting Light, there is a lyric in the chorus that says, “even the darkest days are temporary.”
In Isaiah 60:20, God promises, “Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more; the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end.” Here, God wants us to trust in His word that our bad days won't last forever, and that He will be our light.
The Bible tells us that in the beginning, the earth was formless, empty, and was covered in darkness. Then God said, “Let there be light” and there was light. From the very first verses of the Bible we see that darkness is emptiness, until that space and void is filled with light. Later on in the Bible, we read in John 1:5 that “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Again, God is showing us that He is our light, and with Him darkness cannot win.
Even without Scripture, through our own experience we can attest that when we turn the light on in a room it casts out darkness. Where there is light there can be no darkness. We see from the beginning, and still today, that darkness never has and never will overcome the light. I love how David says it in Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” Let us step into this truth with confidence, that when it seems to be the darkest of days, there is nothing to fear. Jesus is our everlasting light and brighter days are just ahead.
