SWHW Two Year Bible Reading Plan: March, Year 2Sample
Top Takeaway from Caroline Foster:
We are all born with holes in our hearts (figuratively, not literally) that were made to be filled by Christ alone; but more often than not, we run to other things to try and fill those holes. Relationships, success, stuff, affirmation. In the words of The Rolling Stones, “We just can’t get no satisfaction.”
Jesus is who we long for. He is all that we need.
In John 4, we first meet the woman at the well. This is one of my favorite stories in Scripture because it truly shows us the grace, humility, and love of our Heavenly Father. Here we find the Samaritan woman coming to get water at the well.
She was likely coming in the middle of the day to avoid crowds and being seen/judged by other women, or maybe she just had a divine appointment with Jesus. Either way, most people didn’t draw water in the middle of the day to avoid the scorching sun.
So here the Samaritan woman is getting water in the middle of the day when a man asked her for a cup of water. It’s important to note that Jewish men didn’t talk to women, particularly Samaritan women. This was shocking for the woman. But Jesus' reply to her shock was life changing.
He offered her water that gives eternal life. When she questioned Him, He called out the fact that she had five husbands, and the man she was living with currently was not her husband. I’m not sure why he did this, but I wonder if it was a reminder to her of her need for Him, or maybe just a way to show her that He was all knowing, confirming Who He was.
Either way, she experienced this truth —> Jesus is the answer to our brokenness and shame.
After the woman’s encounter with Jesus, what did she do? She left her water jar and ran back to tell everyone about the Messiah.
She used HER STORY FOR HIS GLORY. She understood the urgency of the gospel. We need living water that can be found ONLY IN JESUS. As a result, the people of her town wanted to know Jesus. She inspired and encouraged change inside of them.
Jesus came to bring glory to God. He came to bring relationship between God and man.
Today I want you to ponder on this simple question: Where do you look for satisfaction for your thirst and how is Jesus the answer to your shame and brokenness? Then spend some time asking the Lord for the eyes to see who in your life you can share your story with this week.
Lord, help me to not become consumed by the things this world offers, but to be transformed daily by the renewing of my mind. I want to look more like You every single day. Help me today have the eyes to see the people or person that you have called me to share my story with. I pray that I would be bold in sharing it, not passive. Thank You for continually meeting me in my brokenness and giving me everlasting water. Amen.
About this Plan
Using God's Word as the foundation for our conversation, every devotional is written by women in the trenches of faith, family and work; aiming to live for the glory of God and the good of others. There are enough devotions included for a typical five-day work schedule. We recommend plugging into your local church for the remaining two days of each week.
