In John 13, we see Jesus spending some of His last moments on earth washing the feet of His disciples. 

Washing of feet was typically done by the servants of the home. In the first century, people wore open toed shoes which would have made for very dirty feet. 

In His last moments, Jesus is setting the example for the disciples (and also for you and me) of a life of servanthood and humility. 

“You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.”  John 13:13-15

Jesus is setting the example that nothing is beneath us. If washing feet wasn't “beneath” the King of Kings, any service required of us is far from beneath us as Christ followers.

In His final hours with the disciples, who would carry His message to the ends of the earth, He prioritized that they understand servanthood. 

As one who had his feet washed that night said, “Let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

It is one thing to tell of God’s goodness, but it is another to also live it out in front of those around us. 

Lord, we come to You desiring to be better servants. Shift our hearts everyday to see the needs around us and show us how we can be Your hands and feet to fill the need. We thank You for every opportunity You give us to serve You by serving others. Give us open eyes to see those opportunities today. Amen.
