DAY 11 OF 28

The Meaning in our money

Money, the thing that seems to never be enough when we need it and disappears before we get the opportunity to use it! Although a light-hearted statement, that's probably a situation most of us have experienced. The reality is, money has a lot of power in our lives, bringing individuals both freedom and restriction. Although it feels like a problem unique to today’s society, the interesting thing is, this has been a problem that has been impacting humanity right from the start [Gen 4:2-8]. That's why, as a follower of Jesus, it's important to view money the same way He does.

God tells us in His word, that He wants us to place Him first with our money. He does this by asking us to set aside 10% of what we earn and place it before Him as an act of worship. The Bible calls this act of obedience a ‘Tithe’. So why does God ask me to give 10% (Tithe) of my income to Him? It’s a compelling question and without an understanding of the intended context, it seems like a strange concept. You see, the Bible talks about how everything that you have, first came from God [Romans 11:36] and in return for that gift, God asks that you would give Him back 10% of that amount [Mal 3:10]. Along with promising favour and blessing over the rest of the amount. Effectively God is saying if you’d trust me with 10% of your pay; you’ll be able to do more with 90% of your income [Proverbs 3:9-10] than you’d be able to do with 100% of income [Matt 6:33]. Learning to put God first with your finances is one of the important first steps of faith in Jesus.

PRAYER

Jesus, thank You that You want to be a part of my finances. I pray that You'll help me develop a deeper understanding of my finances and how to trust You more with them. I place my finances before You as an act of worship today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
