Devotions From John's GospelSample
The disciples are exhorted to obey Jesus’ commandments as an expression of their love for him. Jesus also promises “another counselor” who is a resident spirit of Truth for a more intimate relationship (“with you and in you”). What does “another counselor” mean? Was Jesus the original counselor? Jesus elaborates on the Spirit of truth later in 16:13.
(Note: This is the first Paraclete saying: Holy Spirit “the spirit of truth”. We will see four more later)
Dear sister, brother! How does the counselor speak to you? Well, do you listen to him? If you don’t you grieve him (Eph. 4:30). Please keep him happy. Are the commandments of Jesus too difficult for you to follow? Who can help you? Ask Jesus for help.
Prayer
Jesus my prime counselor, thank you for the other counselor, the indwelling Spirit of Truth. Help me to obey you as much as I love you.
Jesus might say…..
My child, I know you love me. Remember I love you too! I also know it is not easy to follow my commands. Take courage I am present with you and in you. Together we can master. Just lean on me and try.
