SWHW Bible Reading Plan: November 2021

DAY 8 OF 22

Top Takeaway from Sarah Martin:

Pride is a sneaky thing. It disguises itself in a multitude of ways: conceit, jealousy, perfectionism, and more. In our passage today, Paul slides in with his own admission of pride and conceit. Can you imagine? An apostle who encountered God and turned from a Christian killer to a Church builder. One who sat in jail with such peace and joy…jailed because of his faith and bold preaching.

It’s hard for me to imagine that Paul operated in the conceit that he mentions in 2 Corinthians 12. On the flip side, I know that I know that I know that pride is a thing for me. You too?

We have a divine invitation to daily check our pride through the lens of the gospel. Pride checked leads to humility in making Jesus’ name known and not our own. Pride checked keeps our perspective in check when temptation arises to concoct our own agendas. Pride checked keeps us as leaders on our knees instead of high and haughty.

So with this divine invitation, might I offer just a starting point to a daily holy habit of checking pride through the lens of the gospel?

  • What do I need to surrender at the foot of the cross today in humility?
  • Because Jesus conquered the grave in Victory, how can I align with His Kingdom agenda instead of my own?
  • Am I living out the greatest commandment to love God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength?
  • Am I also loving my neighbor and sacrificing my time, talent, and treasure to serve and love “the least of these” as I would love Jesus Himself?
  • Where am I weak and incapable? How is this something to celebrate in a renewed vision of His grace that is more than sufficient…His strength that prevails?

Because in his effort to “keep from being conceited,” if Paul can even say this…

“I am at peace and even take pleasure in any weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and afflictions for the sake of the Anointed because when I am at my weakest, He makes me strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10

…then I can take pleasure in my own weakness as well. It’s a divine invitation for sure. Will you say yes, too?

Lord, I worship You because You are the God of all might and strength. I also worship You because You are full of abundant grace and mercy. Help me to get out of my own way and my own pride so my life fully reflects who You are: strong, mighty, loving, and merciful. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

About this Plan

SWHW Bible Reading Plan: November 2021

With God's Word as the foundation, each devotional is written by women in the trenches of faith, family and work, aiming to live for the glory of God and the good of others. There are enough devotions included for a typical 5-day work schedule. We recommend plugging into your local church for the remaining two days of each week.
