Exodus: A Group Study

DAY 12 OF 77

What is this passage saying?

During a sleepless, doubt-filled night, Asaph recounts the faithfulness of the Lord.

What is this passage teaching?

In Psalm 77, Asaph felt as if the Lord had forgotten Israel altogether. During a sleepless night, he turned his thoughts to God’s previous acts of deliverance. Clearing his mind of the current dilemma and remembering the faithfulness of God in the past brought comfort. While Asaph’s circumstances had changed, his God had not.

How do I respond?

At some point, every Christ-follower is confronted with the reality that God’s plans do not turn out as they had anticipated. Like Asaph and Israel, you may be in a particularly hard season, and it seems like God is absent and silent amid your suffering. You may wonder, “Has the Lord’s steadfast love forever ceased? Are His promises at an end for all time?” (Psalm 77:8). The remedy to doubt and fear is not an illumination of God’s plans, but a reminder of His past faithfulness. When everything in your life is unsettled, Jesus remains the never-changing, never-moving anchor for your soul. Are you currently experiencing good times and calm days? Then praise the Lord for His goodness. Are you going through dark, sleepless nights? Then pray and allow God’s presence and previous provision to comfort your heart and mind. He has come through before, and He can do it again.
