Exodus: A Group Study

DAY 23 OF 77

What is this passage saying?

Yahweh responds to Moses’ prayer by reassuring him of His plan to deliver the Israelites from their slavery. When Moses reiterated Yahweh’s words to the Israelites, they refused to listen.

What is this passage teaching?

As Moses expresses his doubt and fear to Yahweh’s plans (Exodus 5:22-23), Yahweh does not recoil from Moses’ doubts, nor does he scold Moses for his faithlessness. Yahweh responds by reassuring Moses of His mighty power and sovereignty over all things. The repetition of the phrase, “I am Yahweh (the LORD)” (Exodus 6:2, 6, 7, 8) is a reminder to Moses and the people that He is their covenantal God and intends to keep all the promises He made to Abraham. Furthermore, the repetition of the phrase “I will…” is a reminder that Yahweh alone is ultimately responsible for the success of His plans.

How do I respond?

In a moment of deep darkness – Yahweh reiterates His faithfulness in the past and promises His faithfulness into the future. In the last reading, you saw God is not scared of your doubts, fears, or questions. In today’s passage, God demonstrates what He wants His people to know when they are in seasons of doubt, fear, and questioning. Just as Yahweh bound himself to Abraham and his descendants, Jesus bound himself to you in the power of His sacrificial death and glorious resurrection. As He has been faithful to bring you out of the darkness of sin, death, and hell, so He will also be faithful to bring you into the Promised Land of eternal life in Him. As He has been faithful to deliver you and redeem you from your sinfulness, so He will give you everything you need to do his will (Hebrews 13:21). God does not meet your doubts and questions with explanations or excuses – He meets you with Himself, and He will always be enough.
