Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture Memorization

DAY 18 OF 35

Child of the King

The movie The Lion King tells the story of a young lion named Simba, who has some pretty big shoes to fill. Simba’s dad, Mufasa, was an amazing king respected by all the lions in their pride. Tragically though, Mufasa was killed by his evil brother, Scar. After Scar takes control of the kingdom, Simba flees into exile, and the kingdom is thrown into chaos.

During his exile, Simba encounters a crazy baboon named Rafiki. Rafiki tells Simba to remember who he is. He is the son of Mufasa, the rightful king of Pride Rock. Through this conversation, as Simba is reminded of his identity, it becomes clear to him what he has to do. He must return to Pride Rock, rescue his people from Scar, and put back together what’s been broken.

Do you know who you are? You are a son and daughter of God, the true King of the world. And you have been called to live for a purpose that is so much bigger than yourself. To partner with your Heavenly Father in restoring our broken world.

Pray...

Lord, thank you for sending your Son to die for my sins. Jesus, thank you for your sacrifice, which brought me back into your family. Holy Spirit, continue to guide me and help me submit to your way of doing things. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read…

For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God. Ephesians 2:18-19 NLT

Consider...

In the first chapter of Ephesians, Paul talks about how God displayed his ultimate power through Jesus and His resurrection. Now, Paul is presenting the implications the resurrection has on each of our lives. One of the biggest implications of Jesus’ death and resurrection is that we have been given a new identity.

We once were orphans, but now we have been adopted into God’s family as His children.

How does this change the way you live—knowing that you have full access to the One who created everything around you and put breath in your lungs? Think about what it means to be a child of the king and the kind of relationship you have with Him. Because God is your perfect heavenly Father and you are His son or daughter.

Practice...

Grab a piece of paper or your journal and write out this prayer/Scripture a few times, until you can basically do it from memory. Repetition is key!

Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Matthew 6:9-13 NLT

Listen...

Set a timer for 5 minutes.

Create room in your heart and mind to hear what God wants to speak to you through the Lord’s prayer.

Ask Him to show you something new today.

If you get distracted, that's ok! Just come back to the verses and let the prayer play over and over in your mind. Line by line, word by word—it’s all there on purpose.

About this Plan

Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture Memorization

In part 4 of Becoming Like Jesus, we are going to explore what it looks like and why it matters to internalize truth. We are going to let God’s Word do what it’s meant to: transform us from the inside out. And there’s no better place to start than with the core who we are, letting His truth shape our identity.
