Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture Memorization

DAY 27 OF 35

Feed His Sheep

Pray…

God, thank you so much for your presence in every moment of my life. Help me become more aware of your presence and sensitive to your Spirit. Help me look for and find ways to love others like you do. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read…

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:15-17 NIV

Consider…

In this passage, Jesus asks Peter the same question three times: “Do you love me? If so, feed my sheep.” Peter answered “yes” each time, but didn’t understand what Jesus truly meant until the third time.

Jesus wasn’t going to be physically on earth for much longer, so He wanted Peter to understand what He was asking of him. See, us, as believers, are Jesus’ sheep. Jesus was charging Peter with the job of taking care of the Church. To “feed His sheep” is to spiritually care for the Church—to love, encourage, and build it up.

This calling isn’t just for Peter. It’s something that Jesus has called all His followers to do. We are called to love, care for, and build each other up. It is a calling to step out of our own selfish desires, and step into God’s calling for our lives—to be focused on building each other up, so that the Church can grow and grow up.

So, what does that look like in our lives? Maybe we reach out to that friend who we know needs Jesus and invite them to church. Maybe you share your testimony with your cousin. What would it look like to ask God for guidance on how to “feed His sheep” this week?

Practice…

One way we can continue to “feed His Sheep” is by having Scripture ready in our hearts and minds to share with those around us. Take a step in memorizing this week’s verse by sharing it with someone today.

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. Luke 9:23-24 NIV

Listen…

Set a timer for 5 minutes.

Try going on a walk and asking God to speak to you.

Enjoy God’s creation as you just listen.

No need to try and come up with any earth-shattering revelations. Just be present with Him and let His Spirit and presence guide you.

When you get distracted, just imagine with each step that you are following right behind Jesus. Fix your eyes on Him.

About this Plan

Becoming Like Jesus: Scripture Memorization

In part 4 of Becoming Like Jesus, we are going to explore what it looks like and why it matters to internalize truth. We are going to let God’s Word do what it’s meant to: transform us from the inside out. And there’s no better place to start than with the core who we are, letting His truth shape our identity.
