Twelve Names of Christ for Christmas

DAY 3 OF 12

THE MIGHTY GOD

“And his name shall be called … the Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6).

Mary knew that her God was a mighty God. As the Son of this mighty God was in her womb, she proclaimed His might and worshiped Him. She realized that He Who was mighty was doing mighty things even within her:

“For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name” (Luke 1:49).

Just like Mary, we, too, may know the Almighty God, the Creator and Sustainer of all things; He is the One Who gives us His strength in our weakness—just as Isaiah and Jeremiah proclaimed:

“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:25–31).
Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee . . . the Great, the Mighty God, the Lord of hosts, is his name” (Jeremiah 32:17–18).

The mighty God of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Mary is the same Mighty God in Christ Who offers us His strength:

“I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

God knew our weakness, so He sent Jesus, the Mighty God, to us.

Kids’ Corner

Children guess the number of times the word mighty is used in the Bible. Look together in a Bible concordance (such as Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible) and see who was closest to the number. Do the same with the word almighty. Identify a favorite verse that includes mighty or almighty and read it aloud. Try to hold up a full milk jug with your arm extended out from your body. Time each person. How hard is it to hold that jug out? Discuss how God holds the world together with His power. Sing, Jesus Loves Me, and My God is So Big, So Strong, and So Mighty.
