To throw a surprise birthday party takes a lot of planning. Everyone needs to be at the party on time, before the person whose birthday it is arrives. Someone distracts the person while everyone else gets set up for the party. Everyone works together to ensure the surprised person doesn’t find out! Right before they arrive, all the guests find a hiding place as the person walks through the door. Together everyone yells, “SURPRISE!”. It’s a lot of planning! The person whose birthday it was had no idea what was happening, but there was a plan all along.

Did you know that Jesus, the Messiah, was God’s plan all along? Jesus was God’s salvation plan for all mankind. The religious leaders may not have known what was happening, but God did! His perfect plan was Jesus, a surprise being planned for hundreds of years.

God’s people were looking out for their Saviour King; they were expecting a mighty leader who would wage war, riding on a white horse and battle the kingdoms of the day. They missed the part of the message from the prophet Zechariah that their king would be humble, riding on a donkey. Jesus the Messiah was God’s plan all along.
