Communication and Connection: A Biblical Perspective

DAY 3 OF 5

Speak the Truth in Love

Truth and love are two of the most profound attributes of healthy communication and connection. You can’t have one without the other and expect your communication to thrive. It is hard to love someone you are lying to, just as it is hard to lie to someone you love. Jesus was the best at speaking truth, even very challenging truths, in love. Despite how many other ways can be attempted, He made it clear that He is the only way to the Father. There is no more challenging truth than that.

Why do you suppose Jesus spoke that truth, even though it was hard to hear? He clears this up in John 8:32 by telling us that the truth is for our freedom. If He failed to tell us that He was the only way and allowed our ears to be tickled by withholding this information, many of us would miss out on the hope of eternity. We would be left in captivity.

Regarding your marriage, sharing the truth in love can be challenging. Sometimes, it’s easier to withhold your feelings from your spouse than to upset or hurt them. The question then is, “Is this loving?” Is it loving to allow your spouse to continue in their sin or wrongdoings and not speak up? Or is it truthful to tell them something they’re doing is okay with you when it is not?

If you want mature communication and connection in your marriage, it will always involve truth and love.

Take Action:

Take the time to self-evaluate. How are you at speaking the truth In love? Do you tell only the truth without love? Or do you only try to love without truth? Where do you need to grow?

Let’s Pray:

Dear Lord,

I want to follow your example in speaking truth in love. Please help me be honest and do so with a loving delivery. In Jesus’ name, amen
