Acts in 28 DaysSample
How many times have you heard, “Things were different when I was younger!”, from your parents, grandparents, teachers, or even in the media? Chances are you’ve heard that, or a version of it, multiple times. Maybe it was just about the advancements in technology, but it could have been when talking about values and changes in society. The reality is, whether you agree with the opinions you’ve heard about the differences between the past and the present (both good and bad), things are changing. Cultural norms are different, fashion is different, political correctness is different, and people get offended at very different things now than they did even a few years ago.
God’s Word, the history of the prophets and kings, the Bible stories of men and women who lived by faith never changes. Yesterday we read about Stephen, and today his story continues.
Standing in front of the religious council and the high priest, he began by recounting Jewish history, mentioning Abraham, Moses, Joshua, and David. The stories of these men are powerful just by themselves. But then Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, began to speak boldly and accuse the Jews of persecution, betrayal, and even of murdering the prophets and the Messiah!
The accusations of Stephen resulted in chaos, and the crowd became agitated and attacked him. What was Stephen’s response: prayer and forgiveness. He knew the truth and did not alter it to make the people around him feel more comfortable. He knew that the word of God does not change, and the actions of God’s people across the generations spoke for themselves.
Society might change over time, but God and His truth do not. As Stephen was taking his last breaths, he saw Jesus standing and waiting to welcome him home.
Well done good and faithful servant. Well done, Stephen – you were faithful to the end.
GO DEEP
Is there an area in your life where you have let your morals or values be compromised? An area where the world has influenced you more than God’s truth? Reflect and, if necessary, spend some time confessing to God.
BE BOLD
What is your reaction when your friends at school or your teachers say something that goes against God’s truth? Do you remain silent, or do you stand firm? Ask God to give you boldness to speak and stand strong in the truth.
MEMORISE IT
“But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.” - Acts 7:55
