Armor Up (For the Workplace)Sample
The Belt of Truth
We don't head into the battlefield of the modern workplace alone. In fact, on our own, we wouldn't fare very well. The Enemy can often use our places of work as a playground for his attacks and calculated lies. We must be alert. We must armor up.
Of all the ways our culture has deteriorated over the past several years, our complete disregard for truth is perhaps the most alarming. It’s always been common for people to reject the things they cannot see with their own eyes. Beyond that, we now live in a society where it is both normal and celebrated to reject the notion of absolute truth. We see a consistent cultural rejection of God’s truth and His design. It can be unpopular to stand for a truth that doesn’t align with favored opinions, and we need to be okay with graciously saying things that aren’t popular. The truth often isn’t popular. As Christians, we must get a little more comfortable with the uncomfortable feeling of standing for truth.
While worldly rejections of truth show up in different settings, it’s often within our places of work we find them to be most difficult to navigate. Think about it this way. If we disagree with the content we see on TV, we can change the channel. There are ways to get out of certain social settings and situations. But at work? At the place we spend most of our time and earn the paycheck we use to provide for our family? The stakes are different, which can make it more difficult to navigate. The first step is knowing truth. Knowing what we believe and why we believe it. We’ll dig into that a bit more in a future chapter.
It’s important to note the belts worn to battle in Paul’s time were not like the belts we might buy at the store today. No, these were battle belts. They were made of a thick and heavy strap of leather, made to hold a heavy sword and other weapons. This powerful analogy links truth (the belt) with the Word of God (the sword). This is fitting, as the Word of God is truth.
PRAYER: Lord God, fill my heart with your truth. As I read your Word, illuminate your Scriptures and give me the focus and attention to commit them to heart and to memory.
