Reckoning (S2-E7)

DAY 2 OF 4

Zealot versus zealous

I"I'm not a Zealot anymore, just zealous." This line captures Simon’s transformation perfectly. He once used force and violence to build the kingdom he believed in. Now, under Jesus’ teaching, he has laid down his weapons – but not his passion. His zeal remains, only redirected.

There is nothing wrong with passion.
There is nothing wrong with zeal, desire, and determination.

The question that makes the difference is: Where is that passion aimed?

Today’s Scriptures give us a powerful picture of godly zeal as Jesus cleared the Temple courts. As his disciples watched, they remembered the Psalm which said, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

Jesus’ zeal was not random energy or uncontrolled anger. It was a burning desire for God’s glory, for God’s holiness, and for God’s people to worship freely. When Jesus entered the temple, His passion confronted a broken system. The money tables made it impossible for people to worship. Jesus’ response was strong because His desire was strong: the Father deserves true worship, and people deserve a place to meet Him.

But notice something important: this passion cost Him everything. The path toward restoring God’s people to worship ultimately led Jesus to the cross. His zeal “consumed” Him, not because He was out of control, but because His love was that deep. His passion brought people back to God, even at great personal cost.

So what does that mean for you? Simon’s words in this episode become a mirror. He surrendered the destructive part of his zeal and redirected his passion toward Jesus. What about you?

Passion itself isn’t the problem. Passion pointed in the wrong direction is.

Jesus looks at the heart. He knows the desire inside you — the part that longs to do something meaningful. He invites you to aim that zeal toward Him: His Kingdom, His purposes, His way.

Passion surrendered to Jesus becomes powerful.

Reflection Questions

  • What do you think of Simon's transformation from “zealot” to “zealous”?
  • What are you passionate and diligent about?
  • How might Jesus want to use your passion and desire for His purposes?

Prayer

Lord, I am inspired by Your desire and passion to serve Your Father. Please kindle that kind of desire in me. Shape my zeal, direct my passion, and help me live with wholehearted devotion to the things that honor You. Amen. with passion for the things of You? Amen.
