Physical consequences
At first glance, Jesus’ words in John 15 can feel heavy: hatred, rejection, opposition. It would be easier if the story of faith were always gentle and pleasant. But sometimes it isn’t.
In this episode of The Chosen, John the Baptist confronts King Herod because the king’s choices oppose God’s ways. John knows the risk. He knows what might happen. Yet he still steps forward because he believes faithfulness matters more than safety.
His story reminds us that following God is costly. Opposition is not a new theme. Jesus Himself faced constant resistance, especially from people with influence and power.
They questioned him, challenged him, and eventually sought to silence him. The earliest church experienced the same, as seen throughout Acts. And even today, many believers around the world face pressure or persecution for their faith.
Opposition looks different for each person.
Sometimes it affects daily life — criticism, tension, or being misunderstood.
Sometimes it affects opportunities — choosing integrity even when it costs something.
Sometimes it affects relationships — being excluded or losing approval.
And in some places, it costs far more.
Jesus prepared His followers for this reality. Light and darkness do not blend. When a life reflects Jesus, not everyone will celebrate it. But Jesus also gave deep encouragement: the Helper, the Holy Spirit, would be with His people. The Spirit comforts, strengthens, and reminds believers that they never face anything alone.
Whatever opposition looks like in your life, the same promise stands. The Spirit is present. Jesus understands. Faithfulness is never wasted.
Reflection Questions
- How do you feel when you think about facing opposition or pressure for your faith?
- What helps you stay steady when following Jesus is difficult?
- Who is someone you can talk to about these challenges?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for speaking honestly about the reality of opposition. Thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit and for the community of believers who walk together in faith. Strengthen all who face hardship or persecution today. Give courage, comfort, and endurance. And please help me remain faithful to You, whatever the cost. Amen.
