Reading With the People of God #12 - the Good LifeSample

Trusting God in Uncertain Times
In 1 Kings 18:1-15, we see Elijah in a difficult and dangerous situation. The land of Israel had suffered a three-year drought, a direct consequence of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel leading the nation into idolatry. God commanded Elijah to present himself to Ahab, promising that He would soon send rain. This was a risky mission—Ahab had been searching for Elijah, and the king held him responsible for the drought. Yet Elijah obeyed, trusting that God would protect him.
Meanwhile, we are introduced to Obadiah, a faithful servant of the Lord who worked in Ahab’s palace. Though he feared for his life, he had secretly saved and provided for a hundred of God's prophets, hiding them in caves. When Elijah instructed him to announce his arrival to Ahab, Obadiah hesitated, fearing that Elijah would disappear again and that Ahab would kill him. Yet, despite his fear, Obadiah ultimately obeyed.
In Matthew 6:19-34, Jesus shifts our focus from fear and anxiety to trust in God’s provision. He warns against storing up treasures on earth, where they can decay or be stolen, and instead calls us to invest in eternal things. Jesus reminds us that worry cannot add a single hour to our lives. He points to nature—how God feeds the birds and clothes the flowers—and reassures us that if God takes care of them, how much more will He take care of His children?
Both Elijah and Obadiah had to make a choice: trust God or be ruled by fear. Elijah obeyed immediately, stepping into danger with confidence in God’s plan. Obadiah, though hesitant, still chose to follow God's will. Jesus calls us to the same faith today. We may face uncertainty, but we are not called to live in fear. When we seek God’s kingdom first, He promises to provide for our every need. Sometimes fear is present with faith, but faith will lead us to trust and obey.
Are there areas in your life where fear is holding you back from obedience?
Are you worrying about things that are in God’s hands?
Take a moment to surrender your fears and concerns to Him. He is faithful to provide, guide, and protect you when you step out in faith.

About this Plan

This is the twelfth installment of a Bible reading plan following the lectionary pattern, offering daily readings from the Psalms, Old Testament, and New Testament. Each day includes a devotional primer to help prepare your heart and mind for a deeper, more meaningful encounter with Scripture. While this plan is designed to align with Holy Week in April, it can be used at any time, though it will be most relevant during that season.
