Every Opportunity

As both parents and grandparents, we probably expect obedience from children. When we give instructions, we would like them to be followed. If we didn’t care about the task or outcome, we wouldn’t have asked. The same concept can be applied to Scripture. God has given us, his children, a directive to go and make disciples. Do we take his instruction seriously? Just like we want our children to listen, God wants us to listen to his words. Following his instructions is a vital part of our relationship with him.

Making disciples might feel like a daunting task but your life is full of opportunities to be obedient to God’s call. It doesn’t mean that you must travel across the ocean or jump into full time ministry. In fact, assuming that you need to make drastic changes in order to make disciples is a hindrance. The truth is that you already have everything you need to teach other people to follow the Lord. He has fully equipped you to be obedient to his instructions. You are not lacking anything.

As you teach your children what it looks like to live a life that honors God, you are making disciples. As you show your grandchildren what it looks like to have unwavering faith in the face of adversity, you are making disciples. The example you set when life is difficult, the way you serve others, and your deliberate choice to honor God each day, shows your children and grandchildren how to live a life of faith. When your actions line up with your character you are guiding them and showing them what it means to follow Jesus.

Don’t overcomplicate what God has asked you to do. There is great power in the way you love your family. You have the unique ability to combine years of experience with humility and kindness. You can show your children and grandchildren the beauty of walking with Jesus and the blessings that come from following his ways.
