Reading With the People of God #15 PurposeSample

True Purpose in Humility and Wisdom
Ecclesiastes 7:1–8:1 invites us to value wisdom, humility, and the refining power of sorrow. The passage flips our expectations: the day of death is better than the day of birth; mourning is better than laughter; the heart of the wise is in the house of mourning. It’s a sober but freeing reminder that purpose isn’t found in a carefree life but in a life deeply shaped by reflection, integrity, and wisdom.
This paradox prepares us well for Philippians 2, where Paul calls us to the way of Christ—the way of humility, sacrifice, and service. Philippians 2:6-7 reveals that though Jesus was equal with God, He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant.
As you read today, consider how both wisdom and humility shape a purposeful life, not by lifting ourselves up, but by lowering ourselves in love.
Reflection Question:
How might God invite you to embrace humility and wisdom as the path to a deeper, more Christ-centered purpose?
Prayer of Illumination:
Jesus, you did not cling to power but emptied yourself in love. As I read your Word today, help me walk in that same humility. Teach me to value what you value and to live with wisdom and purpose shaped by your example. Amen.
About this Plan

This is the fifteenth installment of our Bible reading plan, following a lectionary-style pattern with daily readings from the Psalms, Old Testament, and New Testament. Each day includes a devotional primer to guide your time in God’s Word. This month’s theme is purpose. In Ecclesiastes, we question what truly matters. Song of Songs reveals the purpose of love and relationships. Paul’s letters call us to live with clarity, identity, and mission in Christ. Together, these books invite us to discover God’s purpose—and how it shapes every part of our lives.
